What is Lactose?

Lactose is a complex sugar found in dairy products and is made up of 2 simple sugars; glucose and galactose.

What is Lactase?

Lactase is the enzyme produced naturally in the small intestine that helps convert lactose into glucose and galactose.

What is Lactaze?

Lactaze is a lactase enzyme supplement used when the body does not produce any or enough lactase to break down the lactose in dairy products.

What is the mechanism of action of Lactaze?

The lactase enzyme in Lactaze helps to break down the lactose sugar found in dairy products. This is an enzymatic reaction. Lactaze must be taken prior to consuming dairy products. The effect lasts for 1-2 hours.

From what age can Lactaze be used?

Lactaze can be taken safely from birth onwards as it is a natural enzyme and contains no medication.

Can you use Lactaze with soy formula or lactose-free formula?

Soy and lactose free formulas do not contain any lactose. The use of Lactaze would have no effect on them.

How should you store Lactaze?

Lactaze Tablets and Drops should be stored in a cool, dry place below 25° C. Once opened Lactaze Drops should be refrigerated.

What is the shelf life of Lactaze Tablets and Drops in and out the fridge?

Lactaze Extra Strength Tablets:
30 months: 20-25 C
90 days: 30 C
14 days 40 C

Lactaze Drops:
18 months: 4-10 C (in the fridge)
12 months: 20-25 C
4 months: 30 C

Can hospital patients who have metabolic disorders and patients on ventilators use Lactaze?

There is no problem in giving Lactaze Tablets or Drops to these patients.

If I am unable to incubate the milk with Lactaze Drops before feeding my baby, what is the alternative?

Crush ¼-½ a Lactaze Extra Strength Tablet and give with the feed. A new dose must be given each time a feed is repeated.

Can a person take the tablets with milk or other dairy liquids like milkshakes or would you only suggest using the drops?

Lactaze Extra Strength Tablets can be taken with any liquid dairy product.
Lactaze Drops can be used in liquid and require time to incubate before consumption.
