Causes of lactose intolerance
Lactase intolerance may occur as a result of:
- Intestinal diseases e.g. celiac sprue (disease of the small intestine) and Crohn’s disease
- Gastroenteritis (irritation and inflammation of the digestive tract)
- Gastroduodenal surgery
- Radiation therapy
- HIV/Aids
- Genetic disposition (particularly in the Black African and Asian population)
- Babies with colic *
* Colic is one of the symptoms of lactose intolerance and by adding a lactase enzyme to the baby’s milk, the symptoms of colic can be alleviated.
